MTA price increases - Fight the Fare Hike!
Can you imagine your 30-day ticket going from $81 to $105? And your single ride fair (on multiple ride ticket prices) going up from $2 to $2.50?
The Straphangers group is campaigning to FIGHT THE FARE HIKE!
The gov. is bailing out financial firms - who's bailing out public transit users??? If there's one thing New Yorkers can agree on, its that we don't want our public transit prices to go up, especially as folks lose their jobs and a slowing economy.
Stephen Millies, an Amtrak worker, tried to insult the MTA agency chief by threatening to throw his shoe at him.

Urban loneliness myth debunked by NY Mag
Great article that coincides with ideas on urban planning and other social theories and reinforces the inherent AWESOMENESS of living in the city. I mean, I'd love to go on hikes in the woods everyday, but instead, I get to walk to work!!! Also, cities have more people that are passionate about specific things, ie - dorks, meaning there are social groups that likely celebrate every dorky thing you are into.

Greenpoint's toxicity problem, overcoming GPS banned in Egypt, Parts and Labor, and Revolution OS
For decades, people in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, have lived with the possible health hazards from oil spills in their industrial waterfront. Up to 30 million gallons of petroleum — almost three times the amount dumped off the Alaskan coast by the Exxon Valdez in 1989 — made their way into Newtown Creek and surrounding neighborhoods from dozens of refineries over more than a century.
Now residents have a new anxiety: Toxic gases may be rising into their homes from below, the legacy of dry-cleaning plants, foundries and other manufacturers that once operated in this hub, which has long been home to immigrants and, more recently, artists and young professionals.
Such vapor intrusion — chemicals from contaminated soil and groundwater that become airborne, entering buildings through pores and cracks — has become a growing public health concern around the country in recent years. Contaminants that spread from industrial activity, or that were mistakenly believed to have been contained or eliminated in environmental cleanups, have been discovered wafting into basements. Since 2005, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been testing around the state to gauge the extent of the problem....Continue reading here.GPS is banned in Egypt and how technology promotes freedom.

New Animal Collective track: Brothersport, Auto Industry Bail Out, Subway grades, Google SketchUp 7
Robert Goodman has a NY Times Op-Ed "Have You Driven a Bus or a Train Lately?," which suggests that if we bail out the auto industry they should be forced to be transportation companies that focus on transportation as a whole rather than just auto companies.
I watched the session on the auto-industry bailout last night and have to give the Rep. Senator from Tenn. a lot of credit. He asked tough questions. They all did. Rightly so, because it is the taxpayers money. He wondered aloud-why should we help all three-maybe one of the three big auto companies should fail! Perhaps we should consider funding alternative energy startup companies.
The recent subway grades reported on at the NY Times; "No. 7 and L Subway Lines Maintain Their C Averages."

Phillies to World Series, NIM on impacts, iPhone location apps & plumber Joe's latest pickups
After hearing the presidential candidates discuss his life in such detail last night, plumber Joe might just consider something brash. Anyway, No Impact Man addresses a point made; if environmentalism is about use less stuff, make less impact, have less effect, might we all be better if we just committed suicide? Might not that be the easier solution?
Or maybe plumber Joe will go crazy trying to find out which iPhone location application fits him best.
With all of his new tax breaks maybe plumber Joe is in the market for Apple's latest line of brick (one solid piece of aluminum that saves materials and lightens the computer) laptops or a Google phone.

NYGeog embedded Election '08 Map & Break the Bottle Water Habit
No Impact Man is urging us to pledge to Break the Bottled Water Habit
Here are some facts:
- Bottled water is up to 1,000 times more expensive than tap water
- Forty percent of bottled water is tap water anyway
- Bottled water is less stringently regulated than the FDA than tap water
- The production and disposable of plastic bottles stresses the habitat we depend upon for our health, happiness and security
- The transportation of water around the world by ship and plane causes unnecessary carbon emissions
- Bottling companies are buying up water rights around the world which means free water may not be available at all in the future.
Here's the pledge:
I pledge to Break the Bottled Water Habit by Thinking Outside the Bottle and using a reusable water bottle instead of buying bottled water. I also pledge to support the efforts of local officials to stop spending public funds on bottled water and prioritize strong public water systems over bottled water profits.
Read the Center for a New American Dream's five tips for kicking the bottled water habit here.

New Andrew Bird and Animal Collective in January, OpenLayers 2.7 released & basic computer tips
Here's a nice list of computer tips to send to your parents or maybe you'll pick up one or two. Below is Pasted from my fav's of the NY Time's David Pogue computer tips blog:
Tech Tips for the Basic Computer User
Last week, I wrote an entry on my blog that began like this:
“One of these days, I’m going to write a book called, ‘The Basics.’ It’s going to be a compendium of the essential tech bits that you just assume everyone knows–but you’re wrong.
* You can double-click a word to highlight it in any document, e-mail or Web page.
* You can hide all windows, revealing only what’s on the computer desktop, with one keystroke: hit the Windows key and “D” simultaneously in Windows, or press F11 on Macs (on recent Mac laptops, Command+F3; Command is the key with the cloverleaf logo). That’s great when you want examine or delete something you’ve just downloaded to the desktop, for example. Press the keystroke again to return to what you were doing.
* You can enlarge the text on any Web page. In Windows, press Ctrl and the plus or minus keys (for bigger or smaller fonts); on the Mac, it’s the Command key and plus or minus.
* The number of megapixels does not determine a camera’s picture quality; that’s a marketing myth. The sensor size is far more important. (Use Google to find it. For example, search for “sensor size Nikon D90.”)
* You can tap the Space bar to scroll down on a Web page one screenful. Add the Shift key to scroll back up.
* You can use Google to do math for you. Just type the equation, like 23*7+15/3=, and hit Enter.
* Google is also a units-of-measurement and currency converter. Type “teaspoons in 1.3 gallons,” for example, or “euros in 17 dollars.” Click Search to see the answer.
* You can switch from one open program to the next by pressing Alt+Tab (Windows) or Command-Tab (Mac).
* Just putting something into the Trash or the Recycle Bin doesn’t actually delete it. You then have to *empty* the Trash or Recycle Bin. (Once a year, I hear about somebody whose hard drive is full, despite having practically no files. It’s because over the years, they’ve put 79 gigabytes’ worth of stuff in the Recycle Bin and never emptied it.)
What are your favorite basics-that-you-thought-everyone-knew? Let us know in the comments for this column at nytimes.com/pogue!

Abandoned town in the Lower Hudson Valley: Doodletown, NY
From NYTimes: IT was early in 1965 when the last remaining residents left Doodletown, an isolated hamlet situated in a valley tucked into a rugged crescent of land that curves to the southeast from Bear Mountain to the Hudson River across from Peekskill. Their departure ended an effort over decades by the Palisades Interstate Park Commission to acquire the hamlet to expand ski slopes at Bear Mountain State Park, 45 miles north of New York City...

Phish is back?!, GPS blamed again for car accident, New music: Apollo Sunshine & NYC's hidden parks
From the NY Times, GPS blamed for another accident. They don't clue in as to whether this was an example of bad street data, a poor GPS signal, or user error.
Pitchfork brings us some upcoming Fall 2009 cd releases. They also review the latest from Boston's (I hate the Red Sox) Apollo Sunshine.Apollo Sunshine have been driving at this sound since the beginning, and this album represents a certain maturation of their ability to construct a record. Don't read mature to mean dry or dull, though-- this is still exuberant music that celebrates its sudden shifts in direction. Shall Noise Upon is a great record, and an impossible one to digest in just one sitting. That's hardly a problem, though, because coming back to it is so rewarding.-Pitchfork
The NY Times also profiles some of the city's greatest hidden parks.

Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate Recipe
Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate
1 - medium onion, chopped
1 - clove garlic, minced
1 - tbsp. oil
1 - lb. triple-ground beef
1 - cup H2O
1 - can tomato paste
1/2 - tbsp. brown sugar (optional)
1 - tsp. ground black pepper
3/4 - tsp. cayenne pepper
1 - tsp. chili powder
1 1/2 - tsp. paprika
1/2 - tsp. ground cumin
1/2 - tsp. allspice
1/4 - tsp. cinnamon
1/2 - tsp. powdered cloves
1 - tsp. salt (to taste)
Plate Ingredients: (Cheeseburger Version)
8 - frozen beef patties
8 - slices of white american cheese
4 - cups cold beans
4 - cups macaroni salad
1 - medium onion, diced
4 - cups hash browns, cubed
2 - loaves of fresh Italian bread
40 - generic butter pats
1 - case Genesee beer
Step 1 - Preparing the Special Sauce:
In large skillet, fry chopped onion and garlic in oil until soft. Add meat, stirring constantly with fork to keep its texture fine. Once the meat browns, add water and tomato paste. Simmer 10 minutes. Add sugar and spices. Simmer 30 minutes, adding water ,if necessary, to keep it moist but not soupy. Alternatively, you may use the griddle scrapings from Step 2 for the Secret Sauce (the authentic method).
Step 2 - Preparing the Plate:
First of all, you can substitute any of Nick's other main items in place of the cheeseburger. These items are hamburger, beef hot dogs (red hots, not white hots - that's Don 'n Bob's), steak, egg, veggies, and fish (plain old whitefish, I believe). And now onto the Plate.
Take beef patties straight out of freezer and lightly sear on super hot griddle. Do the same with hash brown cubes. Melt one slice of cheese on each beef pattie. Place 1 cup of beans, 1 cup of macaroni salad, and 1 cup of hash browns on a restaurant style paper plate. Place 2 beef patties on top of the heap, in the center. Spread mustard and diced onions over the beef patties. With a ladle, cover the center of the heap with Special Sauce. Garnish with bread an butter. Drink as much Genny beer as you can. Serves 4.

Great Lakes water saved, should cyclists be on the road, & Open Layers Architect generates maps for you!
Good news, legislators are close to preserving the Great Lakes' water being shipped away. The NY Times reports.

LESEC, Iberdrola to invest in NY wind farms, FREE lumber scraps in Brooklyn, Hurricane Gustav's Energy Impact Map, and a new Mitch Hedburg comedy cd
The Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC) is hosting its 10th annual fundraising event. No Impact Man will be speaking.
The NY Times reports that Iberdrola got the go-ahead to purchase Energy East and spend $2 billion in developing future wind farms in upstate New York.
From Green Brooklyn, M. Fine Lumber is looking to get rid of some free lumber scraps.
GBK reader Joe P. writes:
My name is Joe and I work at M. Fine Lumber Co. in Brooklyn. I just wanted to inform you that we have free lumber scraps if anyone is interested its all from torn down NYC buildings. We are in the process of downsizing and really don’t want to trash it or chip it up. That wouldn’t be the green thing to do. The company has been around for 75 years and has salvaged more then 1,000,000 board feet off lumber. Maybe you can help us out. Call me M-F 7-5 at 718-381-5200.

Google Chrome - Google's new internet browser & Records and record players
Google released a cartoon strip explaining the release of Chrome, its new internet browser application. Read the official Google blog post here. I just downloaded my latest version of Firefox 3.0.1. and am quite happy with it on my windows machine. Recently, I've had trouble with my mac version and am only running safari on it right now. Undoubtedly, I will be testing Google Chrome when it is released later today.
Will there be any improved service for Google Gears and Google Maps???
Hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend. The NY times printed an article in the styles section (why not Arts & Leisure?) about the upsurging trend of vinyl sales. It was a great article to read since I did some dumpster diving last week and found a Califone record player (not to be confused with Califone the band). It appears to work fine and only needs a new needle and maybe a record pad. It has a self-contained speaker and has variable speeds. Online these appear to be priced at $120. So this may have been quite a good find.
